Yes, we can

My favorite partisan reaction to the news (via Blag Hag):

Meanwhile, on FOX (via Regret the Error):

If nothing else, this may explain why our own local FOX affiliate was spelling Osama bin Laden's name "Usama" last night. At first I thought it was because they wanted to get the USA in there, but now I'm thinking it was to avoid confusing the staff.

I'd understand misspelling Obama/Osama. But how can you say "President Obama" instead of "Usama Bin Laden"? O___o

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing and mean your mother.

Usama and Oussama and Osama are the same name, transliterated in different styles from the Arabic. When the US first started paying attention to him a couple of decades ago, he was being referred to generally as Usama or UBL. I'm not sure why the change in "accepted" spelling in the '90s. I do agree an individual affiliate using the "Usama" spelling could be an intentional attempt to avoid the confusion potential.

Oh, I know about the transliteration issue, and if it had been Juan Cole or some other Mid East expert or Arabic speaker using the Usama spelling I wouldn't have thought twice about it. But for FOX to do it seemed noteworthy -- these are the guys who tried to turn "suicide bombers" into "homicide bombers," remember.
