Amazon?!
Oh Matt...

First of all, everyone knows that the best Hanukkah book ever is "Did Judah Maccabee Waterski?" by Sol Scharfstein.

But more importantly, you link to amazon?! Not to an indie bookseller? For shame, sirrah, for shame...

Re: Amazon?!
Perhaps you misread what I said.

I never said local. I said independent.

Yes, Amazon is "based" in Seattle. Just like Starbucks is "based" in Seattle. Just like Time-Warner is "based" in New York City. Just like Wal-Mart is "based" in Bentonville.

Amazon is no better than Barnes and Noble, Borders, or any of the other discount-heavy retailers that are destroying the independent bookshop.

Make no mistake, Amazon.com is killing small businesses, and that is not okay.

Re: Amazon?!
i generally don't buy books online, from chain bookstores, or from discounters like Costco. i try my best to only buy new DVDs from Scarecrow.
i have the luxury of being financially able to pay full price to support businesses i care about. this was not always the case, nor have i always lived in a city and region where books and reading are highly valued. you assume that Amazon is always muscling out the indie competition, where i can assure you that in many rural areas Amazon *is* the bookstore and there wasn't one there before.
Amazon still employs thousands of people right where i live, and their offices are inside the city limits, supporting the city economy and paying local taxes. if i can't get it from a brick and mortar store, i'm going to use them. local trumps regional when i'm making choices about where to spend my money.

(that said, i believe the post is more "look at this cool book" than "go buy this book", and Amazon has a lot of information available about the book on one page. Matt is definitely an indie bookstore patron and cheerleader.)

There's this place...indie, but big and able to ship anywhere easily...oh, wait, you were there...

Second greatest Hanukkah book ever found here.
