Now that I've seen Doomsday...

...I know what Escape From New York would have been like if it had been called Escape From Glasgow, and had incorporated elements of Aliens, Knightrider, Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome, The Last Boy Scout, and The Chronicles of Riddick.

Doomsday was all those things and had my iTunes library as the soundtrack. Normally when I hear that music, I'm writing code not watching a movie.

Just saw this yesterday. I love how Marshall's series of love-letters to the genre films he grew up with manage not to suck. Or in this case maybe to suck, albeit very entertainingly. I find it odd that though I was never really a fan of the Mad Max/Snake Plissken sort of thing I enjoyed this movie rather a lot after the first 20 minutes or so. Intense, insane, over-the-top and a whole lot of fun. Would've been nice if they'd actually trained Mitra to use a sword so that fight could have been more than a bunch of silly quick cuts.

If I gave the award every year, Doomsday would be in first place for "Worst Movie I Enjoyed" 2008.

But there can be only one, and so it is Van Helsing, a much worse movie that I didn't enjoy half as much as this amphetamine fever dream of John Carpenter Club mash-ups.
