Was it Tim Burton or Johnny Depp who came up with the bright idea of portraying Willy Wonka as a Michael Jackson impersonator?

That remake blew. Maybe he was trying to be "true" to the book, but it was creepy. I think Tim Burton is HIGHLY overrated, and all the goff kids who adore him can kiss my flanguine.

THe original movie is far superior in every way. Not just because it's the one from my youth.

Now help me get those kids off my lawn!

My therory is that Depp at this point does whatever he wants to do (or whatever interests him as a part or character), and that Burton won't call him out anymore, and busies himself with the production design/sets/VFX. "Oh, um, Johnny... *interesting* take on the character! Um, yeah, why don't you do that, sure."

Last I heard, they both denied that was the case. Yeah, okay.

Burton's version would have sucked even if he *hadn't* tried to keep working out his daddy issues with a pointless subplot that helped make the movie *less* true to the source novel than the old musical version, not more.

My suspicion is it was Depp, as it was his idea to portray Jack Sparrow as Keith Richards.

It's hard to compare the Burton remake to the original. However, the Burton version doesn't suck at all. It's actually quite a good movie and if the original didn't exist it would be hailed as a genius of a film. In many ways it's closer to the original book in content and certainly in tone and I think some of the choices, like the cloned Oompa Loompas, were very successful. Depp is no Wilder and doesn't try to be, but don't dismiss the movie outright...

...now the Planet of the Apes remake was utter shite.

I liked it.

And, off-topic, Matt, while I'm usually wary about recommending books to others, I've been suggesting to everyone that they read Bad Monkeys, and I've gotten nothing but positive, enthusiastic reactions, such as "I love you so much for telling me about this book! (etc etc)"
so--good going.

In a similar vein:

I have been proselytizing for Set This House in Order.

Well, I think everybody else will hate me for that, but I think the 'new' choclate factory is Tim Burton all over and I really love it. It's his weird, stylized, colourful and especially bend angled world. And I think Depp is playing the choclate addicted psycho more than adequately.
As in politics an opposition is always needed. ;)
