Despite savagely negative reviews, The Last Airbender was #2 at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $70 million.

Now that's a twist I didn't see coming!

Even if it wasn't very good, I can see a lot of parents saying "OK, this is a good way to distract and air-condition the kids for a couple of hours."

Indeed. The other big weekend opening is Twilight, so not a lot of choices for folks that are looking to catch a branch new flick. Of course, Twilight is kicking its butt.

Yes, but that's still not terribly successful.

Airbender's budget is estimated at US$150 million. The standard rule of thumb to break even on a movie is {budget}x2, $300 million. The actual weekend gross (as opposed to cumulative), was only $40 mil, and this on a holiday weekend. The current decay rate is about 50% per weekend, based on the full weekend chart. The implication is, it'll make $20 mil next weekend, $10 mil the one after that, etc.

So it might reach breakeven. It almost certainly won't go into the black.
