Meanwhile, down the rabbit hole...

Here's the cover art for the British paperback of Bad Monkeys:

British Monkeys

Very different approach from the American version, but I like it. One detail that this scaled-down .jpg doesn't fully do justice to is the fake wear along the edges, which makes it look like an old storybook retained from childhood. I'm also impressed that they managed to include a Scary Clown on the cover that, while capturing the essence of Scary Clown-ness, doesn't actually trigger clown-phobia (at least in me).

Edit: For those who are curious, the illustrator is Ronald Kurniawan.

That may be the best book cover ever. :-)

I've never really gotten the clown thing, as they don't scare me at all, and never have, as far as I know.

That's an awesome cover, though.

I bought this today and yes, although author name recognition was about 65% of the decision, the cover attracted me in a way that the US cover doesn't.

The fake wear is especially amusing on a paperback (like the Lethem Gun dustjacket with its fake tears...)

The cover reminds me of the old Josh Kirby covers for Pratchett, so maybe the publisher is trying to get those readers to pick it up.

The first few chapters have me thinking already of other people who will like this book...

It reminded me of the Lethem cover as well. Quite nice, though I like the US cover better.

Woah, nice!!

Who did that, it looks very much like Mark Ryden's work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Ryden

That is a fabulous cover. Makes me consider ordering a copy, exchange rates, crowded shelves, and all. (Being in the US, I have the US edition already, of course.)

I am totally buying that when I go to the UK in November. Love that quote!

It's the star-shaped glasses. How can a fabulous, star-shaped-glasses clown be scary?

Shiny-spotted glasses, very disco, with a large orange lollipop. Disco is always too ridiculous ever to be scary in that Scary-Clown way.

Damn, that's beautiful. I've already got the British trade edition, but if this version turns up in Basel -- or during my Heathrow layover tomorrow -- I just might have to get another one.

Thanks for getting me home
I picked up a UK edition of Bad Monkeys at Stockmann's in Helsinki last week, just before heading home. I was there for a conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (don't ask). I enjoyed it quite a lot and plan to seek out some of your other titles. Keep up the good work.
